Mother and Baby Home Salehurst Rd Eastbourne Sussex
« on: Saturday 25 June 22 12:58 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have my fathers birth certificate which states he is born at 2 Salehurst Rd Eastbourne in 1926. I believe this was a Mother and Baby Home as my father was illegitimate. His mother lived as a domestic servant in Waldron Sussex.
My question is how would his mother (my grandmother) get a place in this particular home which is quite a distance away (in 1926) from where she worked and from her family who are in Brighton.

Not the Upwick Vale but the Bell Hostel just above on the list. It opened 1920.

Thank you Comberton, this is very useful.
Firstly the number change for the Bell Hostel. Also the ages of the women.
My grandmother was 25 so would have been too old for the Upwick Vale hostel, unless she lied about her age.
The Bell Hostel doesn't actually state the opening year, just by 1930,so need to check if it's open in 1926.
There are homes nearer her family in Brighton and my dad wasn't a secret. So why did she go to Eastbourne?
I also have been wondering where he lived until she married when he was 2 years old. She was working in Purley near Croydon, so maybe she paid for him to stay at the Hostel?
Thank you once again for your reply.
