What date & reference for census please? Where is this - nls maps would be helpful to consult.

Definitely Burnedge
Wm Walk
Black Chapel and taking in all houses on both sides of the road to Burnedge including GR.... Cottage, Lamberd[t] Farm

Thank you, I am trying to look at maps right now, a second pair of eyes would be fab.
I've found BurnEdge, SE of Rochdale, Lancashire, 1871/1881 ish, between Rochdale and Oldham.

Have found Ginnell on the map and the census says it's Broad Lane:
Ginnell
Then unnamed house Broad Lane
Then "Calf Hey"
Then "Beet Farm"
then Halfway House
Then Fan View.

Trying to pinpoint Fan View on a modern day map basically. All help would be fab!

Burnedge and Fair view?

There is still a Burnedge Mill Business Park in Rochdale

There is a closed pub - The Fairview Inn nearby on Broad Lane

djm297

Very interesting. The writing could defo say "Fair View" and this makes more sense. Need to find it on a map. It was a farm though, not a pub.

Added: You can see 'side by side' on nls with modern aerial view.

Thanks for this. Fair View / Fan View not on either of them though. I think it must be the buildings between "Beet" on the top left of the image and "Moorgate" because the enumerator looks to be making his way that way down the road, but no Fairview marked on those buildings. Any ideas how I can pinpoint it please? he was a farmer with around 19-26 acres (depending on census) from 1851-1881.

Thank you. Where are you getting the size of the fields from please?

The location of the Fair View Inn is exactly where I think the building is on the 1871 census, and it's the right age too.
