Huge apologies and a correction. JenB got it right. The record is for Houghton-le-Spring (1820; P. 499 of Bishops' Transcripts). I'm overwhelmed by Dials here!

There was a Nag's Head in Houghton-le-Spring High Street at that time. The 1827 directory lists the landlord as Marmaduke Parker.

Great stuff! I just noticed that the left-hand side also has another Dial (Dyal) baptism - Robert, son of Michael and Elizabeth. Thank you!

Durham Records Online suggests that this couple had five children: for the first two their abode is given as West Rainton, the next two (including Mary) it's Knaggs/Nags head, and the last one is West Rainton.

There was also a pub/place at West Rainton called Nags Head.

Complete with the address: 97 Newbottle Street! Many thanks!

Yes, Thomas was a pitman. Long tradition of Dials working in the mines. My line goes back through Robert Dial (1830 - 1909), Peter Dial (1798 - 1873) and Michael (1773 - possibly 1823). All pitmen.

Apparently pitmen moved around a lot, and this seems to account for the difficulty of tracking them down. My ancestors started in Longbenton and moved all over the place before winding up at Consett via Houghton-le-Spring and West Rainton, and then they moved to Australia.
