Help with deciphering a census - Walker in Cable Street 1881
« on: Monday 27 June 22 11:56 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Could someone please help me with my Walkers in Cable Street in 1881... Head is Thomas, married and his 4 children are listed underneath but not his wife. Something is written about wife under "head" but can't read it... Could someone help and tell me what it could possibly mean ? She wasn't listed on the 1871 census either although Thomas was already "married" and by 1891, he was a widower.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Thanks a lot, Shaun. Could they be separated or could she just be working elsewhere or visiting somebody ? I don't know what to think...

I would guess that they were living apart.

Ok thank you. Funny that the childen were with their father then... I'm having trouble finding information about her. Would be Eliza Walker according to one of the children's birth certificate. Could you please help me decipher what it says underneath Eliza Walker - Late ? - Formerly Gilkson

I have attached the birth certificate.

Thank you !  ;)

It looks like late Husden formerly Gilkson. Suggests her maiden name was Gilkson, and that she had been married to a Husden.

Do you agree that the two youngest SIMMONDS children in 1871, William and Henry, are actually Thomas WALKER's children?

Piece   529; Folio   51; Page number  5

I think that the birth of Mary Ann SIMMONDS' son Joseph was registered as Henry Joseph.

SIMMONS, HENRY  JOSEPH
Mother's maiden surname: GILKSON
GRO Reference: 1864  M Quarter in WHITECHAPEL  Volume 01C  Page 363

When he married he said his father was Thomas, a carpenter and when brother Thomas married he said his father was a packing case maker.

There were two Thomas births:

SIMMONDS, THOMAS  JONATHAN
Mother's maiden surname: GILKESON
GRO Reference: 1860  S Quarter in WHITECHAPEL  Volume 01C  Page 328
Died 1861

I think this is the birth of the second Thomas with an error in names on the registration.

JONATHAN, THOMAS
Mother's maiden surname: GILKERSON
GRO Reference: 1862  M Quarter in WHITECHAPEL  Volume 01C  Page 357

Thomas SIMMON(D)S married Mary Ann GILLKSON in 1857 in Bethnal Green, her father is Frederick GILLKSON a Weaver (I think, difficult to read).

in 1861 they are at Piece 266; Folio 64; Page number 38

John aged 12 is GILKSON here and then later SIMMONDS but is not necessarily Mary's son.

I cannot see a birth reg. for Mary Ann Jnr.  Her baptism states that she was born 24 Oct 1857.

Mary Ann GILLKSON born c1831 is with her family in 1841.

Piece   694; Book   1; Folio 16; Page number 24

She went on to marry Thomas WALKER in 1889.

I do wonder if Mary Ann and Eliza are the same person and the names are just of a bit of a cover up for the children's births because they were not married.

It would be worth getting one of the other birth certs to compare info.

WALKER, ESTHER
Mother's maiden surname: GILLKISSON
GRO Reference: 1871  D Quarter in SAINT GEORGE IN THE EAST  Volume 01C  Page 381

Mary Ann had a sister Esther born in 1847 but she died soon after.
