McBreaty
« on: Monday 27 June 22 22:11 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have been searching for quite a while to find information on my ancestor John McBreaty who was born in 1798 in Donegal. He did not remain in Ireland his entire adult life, he married Isobel Shaw in Kilsyth, Scotland in 1824. They immigrated to Canda a few years after.  I am pretty sure that no one has the info that I am looking for but maybe someone can tell me how one would have traveled Donegal to Kilsyth in the 1800?     Thank you

On this site, the statement below is towards the end of the second page

People from south and southwest Donegal emigrated from Sligo or in many cases people from Donegal would go first to Glasgow or Liverpool and then take a ship to North America.

Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

There was a regular service from Londonderry to Glasgow. Usually two or three sailings a week. The main cargo was often freight or livestock and passengers were top up income, so the fares were very cheap. Folk went back and forth all the time. (A lot of Donegal folk still go to Scotland for work, to this day. Some things don’t change.).

By way of example, Belfast Chronicle of 20th September 1828 reports arrivals from Glasgow at Londonderry 9th to 15th Sept 1828 which included the Wyse a steamer with merchandize, the Glencairn with coals and the Britannia, a steamer with merchandize.
