Isn’t “als” an abbreviation for Alias?
Ie he went by Unett and Abell.
It is my feeling from something I have read, perhaps on here, but possibly elsewhere, that aliases are particularly common in the West Country.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm confident about Elizabeth and her father George Unett als Abell... but still can't find any evidence of 'als Abell' except for the Unett als Abell's from Stone in Staffs.
Anyone have any ideas?
