Edmond Leon Rys 1919
« on: Wednesday 06 July 22 19:33 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone, I was hoping someone may be able to help with some infomation please on Edmond Leon  Rys who has turned out to be the father of my friend who has searched all her life to find out who her blood father was.  Edmond died we believe around 1974.

What I know about Edmond is that he married Agnes Bertha Bentein who was born 1928 (Jouvincourt) - the date of his marriage my friend would like to know if possible.  He came from Belgium.

I believe his father to be Petrus Rys who married in 1920 Oostende to Irma Emerentia Belpaeme born 1897 from the same area.  Any information on Edmond and his parents would be gratefully received along with when he married Agnes.

I believe that Edmond was in the forces/military and came to the UK at some point as he had an affair with Winnifred Jones (was Bowhay) who got pregnant with my friend but Edmond returned back to Belgium.  Its taken my friend nearly all her life to find out just his name when she placed a request in a belgian paper appealing for help to find out about her father and got a call from someone but whose been able to give limited help.

Ive tried to find records on ancestry for the marriage of Edmond, his birth etc but can't seem to find anything, perhaps thats to do with the package I have??

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you

20 Aug 1919 - Birth of Edmundus Leon son of Irma-Emerentia BELPAEME, 22Y born in Oostende (no father, the midwife registered the birth)
In the sideline: The child was “erkend en gewettigd” (= acknowledged and made legal) when on 12 June 1920 Petrus-Frans Robert RYS and Irma-Emerentia BELPAEME were married
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSD8-CCXV?i=123 (#362)

So when we look at that 1920 marriage in Oostende (start: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSD8-CBXS?i=489 ):
Petrus-Frans Robert RYS was born in Breedene (=? Bredene) on 10 May 1896 and is a “stoker” . He is the son of Augustus RYS, “dokwerker” and Leonia Maria CORVELEYN
Irma-Emerentia BELPAEME was born in Oostende on 12 Feb 1897 and is the daughter of Edmond Francis BELPAEME, deceased, and Natalia Isabella DE GROOTE.
The sideline tells that the marriage ended in divorce in 1933 (in Anderlecht)
Son Edmond Leon BELPAEME is acknowledged on the next page.

Petrus’ 1896 birth in Bredene: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-G5QG-SZFJ?i=35  (#89)

And now I’ve got something a little confusing.

Petrus-Frans RYS’s MC and BC mention mum’s name as Leonia Maria CORVELEYN who should still be alive in June 1920. His 1896 BC also states that she is 30 years (i.e. born abt 1865/6) and born in Mariakerke. There are 2 places named Mariakerke one in Oost Vlaanderen and one in West Vlaanderen. The first one did not have any Corveleyns around that time, so I’ve focused on the West Vlaanderen one.
This will be Leonia Maria’s 8 Sep 1866 birth in Mariakerke, West Vlaanderen: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9GV1-BNK?i=523 (#29)
Father: Josephus CORVELEIN, 41 y, born in Mariakerke
Mother: Maria RYCKEWAERT, 36 y, born in Mariakerke

So far, so good …
But then there is a 25 Oct 1870 death for Leonia Maria in Mariakerke: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9GV1-B47?i=627 (#71)
(FYI abt 10 days earlier 2 sisters had died as well … see #68 and #69)

Ok, maybe there is some other explanation …
Here is a 4 Sep 1889 marriage for an Augustinus RYS and a Leonia Ludovia CORVELEYN: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GGVR-9WYS?i=53 (#111)
Augustinus RYS, a widower was born 15 Feb 1859 in Gistel (This fits Petrus-Frans RYS’s MC and BC quite nicely). His parents are Joannes  RYS and Ludovica DELEYE (dec 1887). His BC: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9GVB-9N3Z?i=86
Leonia Ludovia CORVELEYN was born 8 Jul 1859 In Mariakerke, her parents Josephus Franciscus CORVELEYN and Maria Ludovica RYCKEWAERT.(both deceased). Her BC: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9GV1-BY5?i=388

In the early 1890’s this specific couple seems to have a few children in Oostende and Brdene, but of course it is followed by Petrus-Frans RYS’s 1896 birth and his 1920 marriage …

And finally,
Augustine Rys (husband of Leonia Ludovica CORVELEYN who is still alive) dies on 28 Jul 1936. The death is registered by “Pierre” RYS, 40y, residing in Anderlecht (remember that 1933 divorce?)
(see the attached image)

That BC was for Edmundus Leon son of Irma-Emerentia BELPAEME.
He'd been born illegitimate because his parents were not married.
