Auchentorlie House
« on: Friday 08 July 22 10:50 BST (UK) »
Can anybody help with records from Auchentorlie House in Paisley? I have an illegitimate birth from June 1921, mother's name is Margaret Douglas, father denied paternity, (Donald McLauchlan), and Margaret gave birth at Auchentorlie House.  I have the poor law record of her admittance, and discharge, but there is no mention of the birth (only she was 8 months pregnant at the time). I know adoptions weren't made official until 1930, but I've been unable to find a birth or death around that time that fits the details.

Auchentorlie House has came up in discussions previously on RC ( https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=65723.0 ).

Unfortunately Renfrewshire heritage don't appear to have much in the way of records for the place. The Poor Law applications appear to be the primary source of information for that period.

Welcome to Rootschat.

Only 4 female births in Paisley, 1921, with surname Douglas on Scotlands People & 3 with McLauchlan

Welcome to RC from me too  :)

More likely registered only under Douglas if father denied paternity (given he had to be at the registry office in person to have his name recorded on the birth reg).

If a girl, could Margaret have called her after her mother? Girls' names showing as Helen Gilmour, Mary, Jean and Mary Gilmour.

Boys' names are David or Alexander.

What were the name of Margaret's parents?

Can you explain without a BC how you know who the father was/likely to have been & how you know the father denied paternity?

What dates do you have for admittance & discharge?

Can you give full info. on what you know with precise dates as your post is confusing & contradicting?

The Poor Law record that I have has the details of admission, discharge, and the fathers name, which also states that he denied paternity.

I will attempt to add the file - it was too big when I tried earlier

This is Margaret's birth - she was also illegitimate so no help with a father's name.

And thank you for the welcomes  :)

Apologies & welcome to RC, I hadn't noticed  ;)

Unfortunately, enlarging the Poor Law record puts it out of focus i.e. I'm unable to read it at all.

It's always best to type up info. which is easy to access when checking info. (scrolling threads) as it takes time to locate images, open them etc.

Too many new people are posting images rather than taking the time to type the info. which will help others to help further.

From the image, it looks like the year is 1922, not 1921.
