Burges family tree, St Ives- dead end
« on: Friday 08 July 22 13:58 BST (UK) »
Hello :)

Im hoping someone can help me - Ive currently traced my family tree back to 'John Burgess born 1771, ( suspect) Married under the St Ives district in 1792 to a 'Sarah Eden' according to the Pallots marriage Index 1780-1837.

I am having trouble confirming this information, whether the spelling of names is the issue or not?

I know that John Burgess was the schoolmaster at a school in St Ives according to the 1841 census.
Based on this census I have assumed that his wifeSarah (mother to Johns children) had died as she was not registered and it seems as though he had all 4 children (Hume,8. Sarah, 11. Betsy, 16 and Mary,49) living with him at the age of 70.

I cannot confirm Sarahs existence, no birth or anything, only this Marriage index document so is hard to move on from here. Even Johns parents are illusive at this stage.

A little help woul dbe sooo apreciated atthis point. I am aware that there was a movement of registration districts when it comes to St Ives after a specific year in late 1700s/1800s.

I look forward to any response :)

Crissy

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat :)

I found this, which might help confirm the marriage,

https://www.rootschat.com/links/01roh/

This looks like Sarah's burial,

All Saints, St Ives
05 Nov 1826
Sarah BURGESS
Age:  54
Wife
Relative:  John,  Schoolmaster

There is a marriage for a widowed John BURGESS in 1830, could that be 49 year old Mary in his household in 1841?

Pallot's
John BURGES    W
Mary OTRIDGE    S
1830
St Ives Huntingdon

Just to make it more difficult, the 1841 census shows that John wasn't born in Huntingdonshire.

This could be his burial,

John BURGESS
All Saints, St Ives
20 Sep 1842
Age:  75

Regards,
Daisy

A warm welcome from me too. :)

I notice that John and 1st wife Sarah had a son named Hume born in 1795,
….. then John and 2nd wife Mary had a son named Hume in 1833 (who died in 1859).
The name Hume seems to be important.
With that in mind there is a baptism for a John Hume Burgess in Wisbech 28 Feb 1763 to parents George and Ann.
George (1798) and Ann (1807) are names of children born to John and Sarah.

Marriage in Wisbech in 1762 for George BURGES (widower) and Ann HUME spinster.

Added ..
But this bapt for John Burges in 1767 is the correct John (your John), as the 1st John died in 1764.

Parents George Burges and Ann Hume. Interesting to note that George is a "surgeon".

Burial for George BURGES in Leverington / Wisbech 31 May 1779 (no age recorded)

Possible baptism for George BURGESS
31 May 1727 (Haddenham Holy Trinity)
Parents Jeremiah BURGESSE and Ann BONEFIELD (married 21 Oct 1712 Haddenham)

I didn’t find a burial for Ann (Hume) BURGES. She might have married again after George died?

some excellent research here, for sure!
words cant describe how thankful I am for your help and finding this forum!

Its been a tricky one for me to work on, i was going on my dads family tree list he made, but he passed away, so have not had anyone to help. Hed have loved to have heard even a fraction of what you have had to say!
