School Admission Terminology

Can anyone decipher the highlighted text in this school admission record please? It's part of some information a very kind Rootschat member uncovered on another thread https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=863995.9

It appears to me to be some sort of abbreviation - 'als: ox aed' followed by of grandmother (which means absolutely nothing to me!). I would really appreciated some help. Thanks

As the following word is Grandmother, possibly a family bereavement?

I agree with Hollander's interpretation. Another possibility might be that the grandmother was ill and the child had been looking after her.
