Percy served with the Mercantile Marine and was awarded 2 medals.
Percy Rowles was born on Monday, 3rd July 1876 at ‘The Coffee Tavern’, Jones’s Yard, Clifton, Bristol the son of Edwin “Cracker” Rowles and Ann Rowles (née Taylor) a ‘Shipwright’.
In the 1901 census he is shown as a ‘Channel Pilot’. His Licence No. was 53. He is later found to be an ‘Able-Bodied’ seaman on the vessel ‘Port Morant’ shortly after 1901. He also worked on the vessel ‘Esperanza’.
He married Rosa Ray in 1905 at Bristol. They had 5 children; 3 sons and 2 daughters.
Rosa died on 17th November 1952 at 20 Redbrink Crescent, Barry Island, Glamorgan, age 78.
In the 1911 census his age is 35 and he is shown as a ‘Pilot’ on the steam vessel ‘Peru’.
His wife and children are living at 12 Redbrink Crescent, Barry Island, Cardiff.
From 1933 to 1937 he was Commodore of the Barry Yacht Club and had been a Barry Channel pilot for 38 years.
In the ‘1939 Register’ he is living at 20 Redbrink Crescent, Barry, Glamorgan.
His occupation is given as ‘Barry Channel Pilot’.
Percy died on Thursday, 26th November 1942 at Rossland Villa, 20 Redbrink Crescent, Barry, Glamorgan, age 67.
