Name on photo
« on: Tuesday 19 July 22 15:38 BST (UK) »
I`m hoping someone might be able to help me with the name on this photo.  The surname is Boardman but I can`t read the initials.  I was sent a scan of the photo by a relative I am no longer in contact with.  She told me it was small and a "tin type photo" but she didn`t know who it was

Possibly but that doesn`t fit with any of the Boardmans that I know of.  I have Alfred; Thomas; William and Henry.  The nearest I get to J is a Thomas James and a Henry Jesse

Would anyone be able to give a rough date for the photo?

Difficult to date this as it is a sideways view but maybe 1850s/1860s.  Could be later.  I cropped your photo and lightened it a bit in the hope that it may help in any way.

Quite difficult to tell but maybe somewhere between 25 to 45.  One probably rather tedious method would be to check Boardman births in the relevant area(s) for any that may have the initials J W or similar.

Deaths may be worth checking starting with the areas in which the Boardman family resided.

Whatever you choose to do it will be a long slog which may not bear fruit.  Have you checked the Surname Interests section to see if anyone else is researching this name?  Scroll down to the bottom of the Forum page and it is under the Your Tools heading.

I was just wondering whether there might be a possible German connection?

I sometimes see ghosts in things  ::) as a result of being in Germany, but I can't help but see a Sütterlin-style "S" in the second initial. I could be completely wrong, of course!  ;D

I’d say then the first letter is an elaborate W .
So William?
Viktoria.

Thanks everyone

Viktoria and Girl Guide - I was really hoping he was my Great great grandfather who died when he was 28 in 1866 , and his name was Alfred William Boardman.  So I would be very happy if the second initial is W but the first doesn`t look like A to me!  I wonder if he was known as William by whoever wrote on the photo

My relative who showed me the photo was also in possession of a photo of Alfred`s wife and one of their sons
