Missing before 1901

Help please. I am trying to find my great grandfather prior to 1901 census.  He was Alfred bates born around 1st or 3rd
August 1880 in hillingdon and married gt grandma Alice selina Poole in 1909 giving age as 26 father Fred bates gentleman.  I can locate alfred on census records from 1901 onwards untik his death in 1935 but not before and cannot find a birth record for him.  I am just wondering if he could be illegitimate as I have found an Alfred paine born 4th aug 1879 Uxbridge

Who were the witnesses to the marriage?

The witnesses were Alice's family

1909 - 26 = 1883
1901 - 20 = 1881
1911 - 29 = 1882
1921 free look he is born 1880
1936 -  54 = 1881

So why do you think he was definitely born 1880?

I was always told he was born about 1881 and that is the date in his grave. 1921 obviously gives year as 1880. I have previously contacted a church who had record of an Alfred bates born aug 1879 parents Alfred and Eliza which I wondered if this could be him

There's an Alfred Bates born Hoxton age 19 on the military deserters list in 1900 - what occupation does yours have?

I have previously contacted a church who had record of an Alfred bates born aug 1879 parents Alfred and Eliza which I wondered if this could be him

I think that one is still with his parents in 1901.
