Ancestry Beta Chromosome Painter
« on: Friday 22 July 22 16:59 BST (UK) »
Maybe I've missed something that everyone's already talking about...but...has anyone seen their new Chromosome Painter on Ancestry? My mum's DNA account has one up, but mine doesn't yet.

I'm interested to know what I can do with the information. 95% of mum's chromosomes seem to match only one ethnicity. Is that normal? Does that tell me anything?
For example, although only 3% of her maternal DNA is associated with Norway, it's only on two chromosomes...same for her paternal DNA - only 2% "Norway DNA" but all on one chromosome.
I'd imagined it would all be a bit more "mixed up"...or does that mean for both her mother and father the "Norway DNA" is likely to come from one ancestor?

(I wrote "Norway DNA" to make things easier to read, I realise DNA cannot be Norwegian)

Thanks for reading
Andy :)

I've had a quick look and I have to agree that I can't really see the point of it. Does it really matter if 10% of chromosome 12 comes from Scandinavia (for example)?

Why don't they introduce a proper chromosome browser  ???

Looks like i have it on my account, and i have to say it looks to be complete fiction compared to what i have proven (or at least am quite certain of :-)  ) based on matches i have painted via DNA Painter.

Totally agree with gadget, why not put in a proper browser, so you can really see details.

Its pretty pointless at present.

Why cannot Ancestry just buy up Gedmatch and DNA Painter and give us a worthwhile set of DNA tools?

I've tried to educate myself a little bit more. A full chromosome browser on Ancestry would indeed be infinitely more useful than this new function they've created.
I've just started on DNA painter but the number of known matches I have on My Heritage if far lower than on Ancestry.
