Morax workers Anglesey
« on: Friday 22 July 22 17:12 BST (UK) »
Could anybody tell me what morax is.
I have a photograph of women morax workers at Aberffraw, Anglesey c.1890. The women whom seem to be making rope but one is holding a broom so is morax the name of the material they are using or the name of the job they are doing?

Interesting, and I'm marking this!

Where did you get the word "morax" from?
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I purchased some photos on eBay that had come from a museum archive. This was labelled on the back “Women morax workers at Aberffraw, Anglesey c.1890”

I’ve tried searching for the word “morax” and so far have only found one reference in a book (link below) which in the second paragraph on page 238 says that women shelling peas in Covent Garden and women hoeing sugar beet in inter-war Britain “…have the same wretched appearance as the women morax workers of Anglesey in the 1890s.”

Interesting to say the least!  Have you looked at 1891 census for Aberffraw to see if there is anything else?

Thank you all. It makes much more sense when you realise they had the wrong word, no wonder I couldn’t find anything about morax! I will now check all the other photos I have with label, considering they came from a museum I assumed all the information on the back of the photos was correct.
