Caroline PROUDFOOT (nee SUTHERLAND) b 1828 Titchwell, Norfolk
« on: Saturday 23 July 22 21:43 BST (UK) »
Trying to locate my 3xgreat grandmother on an 1881 census.

In 1961 she was living with husband GEORGE B and their children THOMAS 1850, JOHN 1854, ANN 1855 and JOSEPH 1859 at 6 Pottery Bank in SUNDERLAND.

In 1971 husband GEORGE B and son THOMAS were not on the census but JOHN 1853, ANN 1855 and JOSEPH 1859 were. 3 further children SARAH 1863, ELIZABETH 1864 and GEORGE 1866 were also listed at Silver Street in SUNDERLAND.
I have found an entry for a GEORGE PROUDFOOT at the SUNDERLAND UNION WORKHOUSE which if correct is why he is no longer in the family home. Sadly he passed away in 1872.

In 1891 CAROLINE 1823 is living with her daughter ANN  (WEBSTER) 1858 and her family at Malings Rigg in SUNDERLAND.

I did find an 1881 census for a CATHERINE PROUDFOOT 1824 also for Silver Street living with a SARAH 1863, THOMAS 1876 and ANN 1881 but I don't think this is the Caroline I am looking for.

All help would be appreciated
Jim

What made you rule out the 1881 census you found?

What address in Silver Street was she living in 1871?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

1881 address was Silver St - same as 1871.  Enumerator error in all probability

1881 census shows a different name ie CATHERINE and the birth year is different.
SARAH's birth year is spot on but other 2 children's birth are way out. My way of thinking is that her husband died 9 years before the census so the children could not be his and are either illegitimate or were fathered by another "PROUDFOOT". I am quite prepared to be wrong.

As I said above - enumerator error.

On the 1871 census - Can you find a Catherine Proudfoot b Norfolk 1828 living in Sunderland with a daughter Sarah b 1863?

Could the other children be grandchildren?  Look at Catherines age - 57.  Too old to be their mother.  Caroline was b 1828 so in 1875 when Thomas was born she would have been 47 and in 1880 when Ann was born - 52??

I have seen Caroline/Catherine switched about before for whatever reason.

Ages were often incorrect on census and the fact she was born Norfolk and living same place as 1871 certainly points to it being her.

I thought grandchildren too, Caroline would be a bit too old to be having those youngsters herself.

As an example of “census variations”

You say in 1891 - daughter Ann was b 1858 -she is shown as 33

1861 census she is 6yrs old so b 1855

I have printed out 7 or 8 other family census' but not come across another Catherine / Sarah combination on any I have looked at.
Their 1st child THOMAS 1851 could be the father of THOMAS and ANN on the census but he married in 1897 so I discounted him. Now need to check for a previous marriage as he could fit the bill.
Their 2nd son died in 1871 so is ruled out.
