Essentially, George Norton has been called as a witness to give evidence in a disciplinary cause against Matthew Bookey, Vicar of St Laurence, Thanet, which has been brought in the Archdeaconry Court in 1725. This is just the introduction to his evidence.

Translation
Statement made by allegation on the part of Norris, given and submitted 29 Nov 1724
Seventh Day of May 1725
[marginated] Office Case brought by Hinds and Troward against Bookey
George Norton of the parish of St Laurence in Thanet, yeoman, resident there for 20 years and upwards, born in the parish of St John the Baptist in Thanet, aged 40 years and upwards, witness etc. …

(St Laurence is Ramsgate, and St John the Baptist is Margate.)

Thank you so much Bookbox. This is amazing :)

Firstly for the deciphering.. and then showing the translation.

I would never have worked it out to that level of detail.

This section on George Norton has helped with the assumptions about his birth and his occupation -  along with other documents and articles I've found previously.

George Norton was also churchwarden 1724 at St Lawrence in Thanet along with John Hooper for that year.

Would this document be from St Laurence?

Here is George Norton's name signed at the very end of the 6-page document as well as a few other places throughout the pages.

Also apologies for the delayed response. It was late evening when I posted this. It's now first thing in the morning.

Would this document be from St Laurence?

Here is George Norton's name signed at the very end of the 6-page document as well as a few other places throughout the pages.

The wording at the end, next to George Norton’s signature, is …

Repeated and acknowledged before me, T. Wardroper, Commissioner

It’s not a parish document. It’s from the ecclesiastical Cause Papers belonging to the court of the Archdeaconry of Canterbury. This was a church court, sitting in Canterbury itself, that would have heard pleas originating anywhere within its jurisdiction.

George Norton signed his deposition in the presence of a commissioner, Wardroper, who was probably in Thanet. This implies he didn’t attend the hearing in Canterbury in person. Instead, his statement was delivered in court by someone else (presumably Norris) when the cause came before the court in Canterbury in May 1725.
