One or two Hannah (Parker) Winns
« on: Monday 25 July 22 22:09 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks, I am very new to this and thought I was making progress, until I hit this mystery.

I thought my parental line was as follows :
Arthur Gerald Winn b1898 d1966.   Brother of Henry Murray Winn and Marjorie Annie M Winn and husband of Olive Graham (Smith) Winn
Father of ARW : Thomas Winn b1864 d1936 married to Louisa Jane Murray b1872 d1962
Father of Thomas Winn is (I believe) Thomas Winn B1839, Birtley, Durham and married to Hannah Parker B1838 D1920, Spital Tongues. The line continues.....

Now I have contact with a living Winn. He states that :
is grandfather was James Winn, married to Lilly Mather Dowding.
James parents were Thomas Winn married to Barbara Ann Rae.
Thomas parents was a Thomas Winn married to Hannah Parker.!!!!
He also said a marriage certificate for Thomas and Hannah showed the surnames were spelt WHINN ( THOMAS WHINN AND WITNESS JOHN WHINN father of thomas)

But here's the thing.
On Archives.com I find "a" Thomas Winn Born 1876 • Waldridge fell Chester-le-Street, Durham
His Parents : Thomas Winn Hannah Parker and Spouse Barbara A Rae.
This Thomas "appears " to be a different one to my Winn lineage... but wait... it gets confusing now.

The Thomas that I have been following  (on archives.com) was Born abt 1839 • Birtley North Side, Durham. His parents and spouse :
Parents : John Winn,  Jane Pallister.  Spouse : Hannah Parker and she was born - Born
abt 1838 • Spital Tongues, Northumberland.

So I am a bit lost.
Do we have two Thomas Winns.
Do we have two Hannah Parkers
Was there a marriage that I have not found.... I mean did Thomas marry both.
Is the Whinn a Winn or the other way around.

I welcome help from anyone that has more experience in sorting out this kind of thing.
I have managed to sort out a separate case of two marriages but this one is tricky for me.

Thanks in advance.
Winn, Wynne, Wynd, Wind, Winde

Thomas Winn & Louisa Murray married 1891.  Does their marriage cert confirm his fathers name was Thomas?

Your Thomas was b Pelton per 1901 & the 1871 shows parents as Thomas & Hannah

I have just had a look at some of the Thomas/Barbara family trees on Ancestry.  Good grief, I can't even get my head around what they have done.

Nobody seems concerned that the son of Thomas WINN and Hannah PARKER is 10 years older than the man who married Barbara RAE.

1891 census

The family are still in Waldridge with the only three surviving children, William, Thomas and Jane Ann.

Piece: 4121; Folio: 9

1901 census

Thomas is still at home with his parents in Waldridge.  He married Barbara in the second quarter 1905.

Piece: 4700; Folio: 116; Page number: 17

1911 census

Thomas and Hannah are still in Waldridge.  William Martin is also entered but crossed out, perhaps he was going to stay the night but didn't.  He is with his wife Margaret and children, also in Waldridge.  It is also possible that Thomas thought he was supposed to give details of all his children and then realised his mistake.

Also with them is Jane's son Thomas William Winn LYNN who was born in 1900 (recorded with the WINN and LYNN the wrong way around).  Jane Ann married Thomas LYNN in 1900 and she died in 1902.

Hannah has had 11 children, just two still living, William and Thomas, so there are three children missing from my list above who perhaps died before they were registered.

In 1921 Jane Ann's son Thomas LYNN is with William and his family.

Hi Folks, thank you so much for all this.
I assume I can safely say that my lineage runs as follows >
Gregory Winn (me) > Gordon Winn (my father) >
Arthur Gerald Winn b1898 d1966 (grandfather).
He is brother of Henry Murray Winn and Marjorie Annie M Winn (all of whom I have met).
Arthur is husband of Olive Graham (Smith) Winn (my nana)

The Father of Arthur G W is Thomas Winn b1864 d1936 married to Louisa Jane Murray b1872 d1962
The Father of Thomas Winn(1864) is Thomas Winn B1839, Birtley, Durham and married to Hannah Parker B1838 D1920, Spital Tongues.

Am I correct?

If so I am fairly confident that I can sort this out, Im not sure where that leave the Barbara Rae connection or the Winn/Toward line which I have not come across before.

There seems to be many Winns, but I think I am making progress. My Trees are on FamilySearch and Wikitree. But there are still many deadends and missing connections.

Thanks to Dundee and Carol.
Best regards
Winn, Wynne, Wynd, Wind, Winde
