Hi

I have a John Smith and Jane Hall

In the 1851 census for Jane Smith of Birkenhead Cheshire UK are

Jane Smith 40 widow Ireland = 1809

Thomas Smith son 13  Ireland 1835-1894

Mary Smith dau 11 Ireland 1840-1896

Betsy Smith dau 9 Ireland 1842

James Smith son 7 1844 Birkenhead Cheshire

Jane Smith dau 4 1848-1920   same

Ann Smith dau 1850   same

two brickwalls I have here.....John died 1850 Birkenhead therefore not in the 1851 census...however some say born 1813 Latchford Cheshire

and another says he died at 53 ..Lancaster England C of E Deaths 1813-1986 for John Smith, Bishops transcripts Liverpool 1850-1859 at Workhouse at 53.

Some say he was born in Ireland as Jane Hall was and 3 kids....there first kid born 1835 = John was 22    the workhouse John would mean born 1798.= 37 years old

I can not find a marriage for John and Jane hall or births for the first three kids in Ireland,....just seems odd to me that if John born in Cheshire would go to Ireland, at approximately the time of the potatoe famine

when most people were getting out of there

Appreciate any help with this little mystery Please

Rick in Australia

Just to point out - Latchford THEN was Lancashire - Latchford is in Warrington
so - only ONE Baptism in Warrington 1813 for a John Smith

Baptism: 28 Feb 1813 St Elphin, Warrington, Lancashire, England
John Smith - Son of Joseph Smith & Ruth
    Abode: Bank St
    Occupation: Weaver
I am not saying this IS your John Smith - but a possible
if you google Bank Street ,Latchford ,Warrington - a map appears -
What is putting me off this being your John is - none of Johns children named Joseph or Ruth after his parents ?
anyway - maybe just make a note of it for future reference ??
You can see the record on here - https://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html
...............
ADDED - Hmm - states Latchford in 1840's is Cheshire ,very close to the Lancashire border - then says -Latchford was placed within the County Borough of Warrington, and the registration county of Lancashire until 1974 - very confusing - the way I read it is Latchford ,Cheshire but St Elphins church was in Lancashire - sorry - maybe another member can clarify ??

Cheshirebmd
SMITH   Ann   HALE   1849   Woodchurch   Wirral   WOO/5/9
I live Liverpool over the Mersey from Birkenhead - Woodchurch is the name of the Birkenhead Ferry Landing Stage - so I think you have hit the nail on the head ....

Thanks Garsonite.

The John Smith died 1850 registered Wirral was age 0

The John Smith 1849 registered Wirral was 78

How do you know her husband's name was John if he wasn't on the census, do you have a birth certificate of any of the children?

From GenUKI:

"LATCHFORD, a chapelry in the parish of GRAPPENHALL, hundred of BUCKLOW, county palatine of CHESTER, 1˝ mile (S.E.) from Warrington, containing 1252 inhabitants."

Latchford was a township in Grappenhall ancient parish, Bucklow hundred (SJ 6187), which became a civil parish in 1866.
The civil parish was transferred from Cheshire to Lancashire in 1894, and was abolished in 1898 to become part of Warrington (Lancashire).
It includes the hamlet of Wilderspool.
    The population was 754 in 1801, 2542 in 1851, and 6528 in 1891.

Dublin Workhouse  1840

There is a Jane Smith born circa 1811, Thomas 1836 and Mary 1839

This is on FindMyPast and I don't have a sub for it so perhaps someone else can look and see if it's a possible.
