Dreadful writing by Sellindge's vicar
« on: Tuesday 26 July 22 16:26 BST (UK) »
From Sellindge, Kent 1667 (or 1664 if you see the rotten transcript) Richard Wick (or West) and Elizabeth Bolden (or Bolvin).

I can read:
Ricardus Wick et Elizabetha Bolden matrimonialis(sp?)/
something something vidua something - 67

Why the writer makes this entry in Latin and the others in English I don't know. His dreadful writing is mostly the problem. Any suggestions for the 2nd line?

This is also
Boulding Boulden Bollyng (all - mostly Kent)
Finch (Kent - Henry & Elizabeth (Fossett)  Finch m1687  London)
Foord (Kent - Aldington, Stanford area)
Philpot (Kent - Alexander Philpot died 1601 Ashford)
Waggon/Waghorn (Kent pre 1715)
Rose (Kent)

It runs on from the first line and I think it reads (or at least means?):

.....matrimo
nio coniuncti sunt vicesimo octavo Aprilis

That is, they were married (literally 'joined in marriage') on 28 April. I think it's probably 67, but nearby entries and page headings might help you to deduce whether that is more likely than 64.

My word that was quick. Thanks ever so much. Wonderful service!

I was rather hoping there was going to be some exciting revelation but, alas, not today. Had I been able to decipher the writing I might have stood a chance

Why the writer did all the other entries in English but this one in Latin escapes me.
