Swords family on the censuses
« on: Wednesday 27 July 22 21:53 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm having trouble finding my Swords ancestors in the censuses, I have found a few though. Michael and Anastasia nee Freeman married in Graignamanagh in 1858. They left Ireland in 1860 (last recorded in February 1860 in Borris, Carlow, when their son James is baptised).

In 1861, I've found Michael on the census aboard the Arabia (I think).
SWORDS, MICHAEL, 34, FIREMAN, LANCASHIRE, LIVERPOOL

They had a daughter in 1865 in Liverpool called Catherine, though her parents aren't listed on her baptism record, anyone know why?

In 1871, I've found them in Liverpool
MICHAEL SWORDS, HEAD, MARRIED, 48, LABOURER AMONGST [?] IRELAND
ANASTASIA DO, WIFE, MARRIED, 34, –, DO [the transcript has her name dreadfully wrong, its recorded as Annettaha on that]
JAMES DO, SON, –, 11, –, DO
KATE DO, DAUGHTER, –, 6, LANCASHIRE, LIVERPOOL.

In December 1871, Michael and Anastasia have another child, Thomas. He died in 1877.

In 1881, I've found only Anastasia:
ANASTACIA SWORDS, HEAD, MARRIED, 41, FIREMAN'S WIFE, IRELAND. Her children aren't with her, nor is her husband.

Anastasia died in March 1891, and the certificate lists Michael as an army pensioner. The family appear on the 1891 census:
MICHAEL SWORDS, HEAD, WIDOW, 62, DOCK LABOURER, IRELAND
MICHAEL FINN, SON-IN-LAW, MARRIED, 28, DOCK LABOURER, LIVERPOOL
CATHERINE DO, DAUGHTER, MARRIED, 25, –, DO
WILLIAM DO, GRANDSON, –, 3 –

Michael Swords died in 1900.
I haven't found Michael and Catherine and their children in 1901 either.

Swords isn't a common name, and I've found quite a few variations of it, like Seward, Sword, etc. I've tried searching them, and nicknames like Kate in rather than Catherine as she is listed in 1871, but still nothing more than I've already found.

I'd be really grateful for any help anyone can offer, thank you. :)

There is no birth recorded for a Catherine/Katherine Swords circa 1865 was she perhaps adopted, the reason no parents listed.
Given the name Catherine by Michael and Anastasia.

ADDED
What about the names of the godparents Richard ? and Maria Goff?

They had a daughter Mary Ann  Sword 1862 who died 1866 age 3

Thank you for your response, amondg. In truth, I have no idea why her parents weren't recorded and I think adoption can't be ruled out. I haven't found any evidence to say she was adopted, but that doesn't mean she wasn't of course.

Her baptism record is this, just for reference:

Our Lady of Reconciliation de La Salette, Liverpool:
born 11 February 1865, baptised 19 February 1865
Catharina Swords, daughter of Swords X (nee –)
Godparents being Maria Goff and Richard Carle?

I haven't managed to find a birth registration for either of their other children (Mary Ann and Thomas) though their deaths were both registered and James was born in pre-registration Ireland, so obviously no records there.

I haven't identified a connection to the Goff family.

Thank you for pointing out they had another daughter too.

Anastasia Jr. died September 1890
Mary died in July 1896
Michael FINN in 1906. - Only have the reference for this, no accompanying burial record to confirm or deny, but looks like the biggest possibility.
Michael SWORDS in 1900.

It would appear Michael died in the Liverpool Workhouse 29.3.1900, possibly the infirmary. Usual address was 1/12 Tatlock St with his daughter Catherine Finn.

Admitted 19.3.1900
Occupation labourer
Widower
Age 74

Thank you for confirming the exact date - I had stipulated the year in my original post. In the post above yours, I was referring to the death of Michael's son-in-law, Michael Finn. Sorry, I should've been more clear, I've now modified the post. :)
