Mabel Ann Powell
« on: Thursday 28 July 22 18:41 BST (UK) »
I hope someone can help me find out what happened to my great aunt Mabel Ann Powell.
She was born in Wendover Buckinghamshire in 1902 ,her parents were William James and Hannah. She married Richard Ambrose Cross 1904-1941 and I believe they had a daughter called Patricia.
Te next thing I can find is her name on the Wendover Register of Electors 1958-1960 She is living at 9 Aylesbury Road with her father William and brother Peter James but she is names Mabel A Smith. There was a story she helped run a pub in Aylesbury but that’s all I know about it.Also her parents and siblings have graves or plaques in Wendover St Mary’s  Church yard but I can’t find anything about her place of death.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin

So Mabel  may have remarried after the war

Mabel A Cross or Smith
Q2  1950
Amersham  Volume 6a p 649

Spouse:    William H Smith

this formulation of name would usually suggest a divorced woman, but that would quote maiden and first married name, and you say her first husband died in 1941. Maybe William wasn't free to marry and they lived together with her being known as Smith, which is then repeated on her marriage?

Another point which counts against this is the death of a Mabel Annie Smith b 7 July  1899 registered in Amersham

2 children born 1950 & 1954 in Bucks - surname Cross mmn Powell???  No other Cross/Powell marriage in Bucks & Mabel would have been 52 in 1954
