William Eden Hook Norton

Reopening Pandora's box here but this one has stumped me for well over a year.

This question has been asked before but after 10 years I think it's worth another look:

Looking for a 'William Eden' who was born c. 1813 in supposed Barford St. Michael, Oxfordshire. He married Mary Ann Phipps in Hook Norton on 20th April 1834 (Wits - Thomas Eden, Arminda ? Edden) and is believed to have 7 children with her. The only census record I have for him is 1851 in Hook Norton (age 37) living with his wife and three children. No idea when he died but interestingly his wife can easily be found in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census (indicating that William may work away) and she is never listed as a widow.

A fresh pair of eyes might be good on this - I know some of you like a challenge. I may be able to take a detour to Hook Norton in December but we'll have to see.

Many thanks
Zak

I would look at emigration as he is never seen again after 1851 and Mary Ann has no other children after 1851.

Mary Ann would assume she was still married until she heard otherwise, but on the marriage certificate he made his mark so unsure if he would be able to write to her.

Did any of the Phipps family emigrate, people rarely go alone they usually go in a group or are meeting a relative who went ahead.

There is a fairly comprehensive family tree for the Phipps family at : http://marisancestry.co.uk/Reports/George%20Phipps.pdf

I think the Phipps family were the opposite, with many staying local. You're right though, I can find absolutely no trace of William Eden post-1851.

Hello, no this hasn't been suggested before. Unfortunately I don't have access to international documents. William is the correct age but having a son that was born 1851 doesn't seem right.

I've tried looking in a few directories of the 1850s for Hook Norton but William is not mentioned.

The Canada census is freely available online.  Hannah is unlikely to be the mother of James and Robert.  Although relationships are not stated in 1871, Robert named his mother as Hannah when he married, (William) James named his mother as Betsy.  Both said they were born in Belmont, England, which I assume is Lancashire.

The next page has Robert, 25, John H., 12, Mary A., 11, Elizabeth, 6, Hannah, 4, Charles 7 months.

Hannah's surname on Charles' birth registration is ROWE.

Given the ages of Robert and James, this probably isn't your William.

Was he listed as Eton not Eden?
Was he in the military?
Was he imprisoned?
Was he transported to Australia?
