Thank you very much. Isabella and Daisy (Catherine Daisy) were Betty or Lizzie's aunts. Lizzie was orphaned aged 7. Her grandmother brought her up. That all makes perfect sense and means that I have the correct Betty/Lizzie Lay. Why did James give his name as Charles Edwin Thomas when they married? I guess we will never know the answer to that one.

So, if he deserted, why would he end up serving under a different name? I think that he was quite an unpleasant person so I am happy to accept that he may well have deserted. Did he go home and was sent back? So many questions. There was a Charles Edwin Thomas from Missouri who enlisted but his mother wasn't Ada.

Incredibly exciting.
Charles Thomas has a CEF file!
Born 29 May 1894, Springfield, Green County, USA
Next of kin was originally his mother Ada Thomas.

New next of kin, Wife, Mrs Lizzie Thomas, 25 Solon Rd, Acre Lane, Brixton.
Joined up in 1915.
He was a Farmer
Religion Baptist.

Canadian Expeditionsry Force
I can find one record but it doesn’t seem quite the same - no mention of Lizzie.

Here is the entire CEF record courtesy of Library and Archives Canada. His wife is mentioned on at least pages 25 and 43 of 56 total pages. May be slow to load.

I could be wrong but I don’t see any record of desertion. Are you sure you sure you have the correct soldier there?

Add: Lizzie on Pg 17 too.
We search for information but it is up to the thread owner to verify that it is correct.

Thank you PB. I see my link didn’t work anyway but only the first page.

The desertion refers to James Kensinger - US soldier who was /maybe Charles Thomas
