WILLIAM BRIGHAM (b 1838) and ALICE RAMSAY (b 1840)
« on: Friday 05 August 22 21:31 BST (UK) »
No luck with last topic I am now looking for some information for James and Jane's son William and his wife Alice Ramsay (married 1866 Berwick). I am fairly sure Holy Island falls within the Berwick registration District.
Things to be found are :
for William born on Holy Island.
1861 census - In 1841 and 1851 he was living on Holy Island with his parents James and Jane.
1881 census - In 1871 he was living with wife Alice (Ramsay) in Cornforth, Co Durham.
                       - In 1891 he was living in South Shields with a son. a daughter and her husband. He died in 1900.
for Alice born in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
1851 census - In 1841 she was living in Newcastle with her parents John and Jane and her sister
1861 census - In 1871 she was living with husband William and their first 2 children
                       - In 1881 Alice was back on Holy Island with 6 of their children. She died 1883.
As always any help is appreciated

What year was she born please?

Have you found her parents and sister in 1851?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire

for Alice born in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Am I looking at the wrong Alice?

1851 Alice Ramsey age 14 born Tweedmouth (mother Elizabeth a sailors wife)
1861 Alice Ramsey age  24 born Tweedmouth. I think father is James, but he is away, and Elizabeth the mother has been inserted instead. Sailors wife)
1871 Alice Brigham age 32 born Tweedmouth
1881 Alice Brigham age  36 born Tweedmouth

Added Tweedmouth,
1841. James Ramsey, Mariner 35 born Scotland (Alice is 5 on this one)
Implied Mother (as it is the 1841) Elizabeth 30. Sibs John 10, Mary 8

Alice is born  Tweedmouth  in 1871/1881 not Newcastle upon Tyne

There is an Alice Ramsey in 1851/1861 but details don't seem quite right - who was the sister you mention in 1841?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

The only occupation I can find was in 1891 when he was a coalminer.
Alice was born c1840
Not found any of her family in 1851 or 1861

The 1861 census is a possibilty. Having looked at the census itself there does look to be a transcription error. Transcribed as Burgham not Brigham which is not a search option I have used,

I have seen a birth transcript showing Alice (residing in Newcastle) to John Ramsay and Jane.
I then found a marriage showing John Ramsay and Jane Gibson.
Jane's surname Gibson is the middle name of William and Alice's youngest daughter Mary (1879).
I have not done any work on John (c1811) and Jane (c1811) so do not have an occupation for him.
