James Underwood - 1780 - Yardley Hastings - baptism/marriage?
« on: Saturday 06 August 22 15:44 BST (UK) »
Dear all,

I have James Underwood, born abt 1780 in Yardley Hastings.

On the 1851 census (HO107/1738; Folio: 29; Page: 14) James is married to Hannah, aged 78, born in Rothwell.

Can anyone find a marriage for these two?

I am also struggling to find a baptism for James.  If anyone could help, it would be very useful!

Many thanks.

The old Allan Clarke indexes for Northamptonshire has one possible:

James Underwood (of Wollaston) married Hannah Lack (of this parish) in Yardley Hastings on December 28th 1830.  There is no record of either being a bachelor or a spinster. Wollaston is about six miles south of Yardley Hastings.

Couldn't find a suitable baptism for James. Maybe Hannah was a widow which would cloud her baptism rather!

Cheers Alan

Hi Alan,

Thanks for your reply.  All very interesting - definitely a possible.  Will need to dig a little deeper, me thinks!

Do you have many Underwoods from Northamptonshire? I have 61 in our database, most from the Welland Valley. Perhaps you could send me a PM if you would like to compare notes.

Cheers Alam

There is also this marriage which would be a better timeframe. There seem to be a number of children born to couple up to 1811 in Rothwell and then Yardley Hastings. Check freereg.

Image on Anc
James Underwood
Marriage Date:   24 Jun 1798
Marriage Place:   Castle Ashby, Northamptonshire, England
Register Type:   Parish Registers
Spouse:   Hannah Joy or Toy

1841 has him as Jos Underwood with a number of family including married son Jacob and wife who are with them 1851. Also James is in a very large tree on Anc  (would need to be verified)

Thank you for taking the time to look. I had seen the Castle Ashby marriage, but their own parishes seemed out. Although if they were working/living there, that would be what was listed, right?

Castle Ashby comes under the same registration district as Yardley Hastings when checking parish. I have no knowledge of area, but on map is close by.

It has Hannah of the parish and James of Bozeat? could be they where living/working there and not born there.

Added: In the Bishop transcript of marriage the surname looks to begin with T comparing writing on page. Just for you to be aware there are a vast number of trees that have her surname spelt (Tye) if you wish to check out.

I have found an alternative 'Hannah', who seems to fit better.

Hannah Panter was baptised on 1st January 1772 in Rothwell to Thomas and Hepzibah Panter.

There is a marriage in Islip, which is about 14 miles from Rothwell: 20th February 1799, James Underwood and Hannah Panter, both of 'this parish'.  It would make sense for them to go back to Rothwell, in order to start their family.
