Sometimes the lettering appears with a torch shone from the side.

Is there enough lettering left that the old brass-rubbing technique with thin paper and soft wax crayon might work?

That greenish oblong area rather looks as if someone has tried to clean it in the past and made things worse. Using anything other than water is usually not allowed anyway. It doesn't look smooth enough for just being wet to help, but it might be worth a try.

Yes I hope to visit again tomorrow, I tried rubbing the letters with some grass as in the past this has worked but as you can see it did nothing to improve it,  I have been told to use talcom powder and a sponge , would be interesting to hear anymore ideas .

Thanks very much for all the ideas, I will start with the mirror one first then progress through the others, unfortunately it will now have to wait till friday as something more urgent has come up.
