the big assumption is that John Yates is Edward John's father. It's interesting to note that John  isn't listed as deceased on the baptism, although we know he was according to the census. Being in a big town it would be easy to give incorrect information and just say "oh my husband's away in the army"

yeah I have the original, original certificates for Edward John Yates birth & baptism, the original, original certificate for the marriage of John Yates and Mary Ann White, the original, original copies of Edward John Yates marriage certificate to Mary Jane Aykroyd. I also have the original copies of Edward and Mary Jane Aykroyd daughter Ida Yates and her husband Christopher Winchester death certificates and their marriage certificate. I also have the original, original copy of the telegram sent to Mary Jane Aykroyd to inform her of her son Sidney Yates death in France{along with grave certificates and the grave poem that the UK Government sent his mother.}. all the certificates were found in paper work after Ida Yates died as it was my Aunty{the last surviving daughter of Ida Yates} and her 1st ex husband who were the informants of her death.

Walter's father is listed as John Bell on the wedding certificate and his job profession is listed as
coal miner

For info. - have just come across the official m/c on a public tree

WALTON Herbert BELL age 34, bachelor occ book keeper
father John BELL (deceased) occ Coal Merchant

Mary Ann YATES age 32, spinster
Father William George WHITE occ stone mason

Both signed their names, both resident 17 Alma Street Blackburn
One of the witnesses was M? A BELL

May just be a coincidence but I think there might be a possibility that
Walton Herbert BELL/BEIL(E) from Quebec, book keeper and WaltonHerbert BELL from Leeds, book keeper are one and the same  ???
Walton from Leeds has a sister named Maria Agnes BELL (she might be the witness to his 1875 marriage to Mary Ann Yates - shame the name is not written in full  :-\)

I wonder how close Bicknell Street Blackburn & Alma Street Blackburn are to each other

no the sister was called Maria Beatrice Beil and the son was called Cecil Percy Beil died 1916 in France aged 37.

Even Minnie Terrace is there where Mary Ann’s sister was living. :)

I think I was mistaken with Maria's middle name Agnes (have removed) I thought I'd seen it written on the census as her second name   ::) Maria A pob Halifax possible birth entry
BELL, MARIA  ANN mmn WHITAKER 1846  J Quarter in HALIFAX  Volume 22  Page 244
Edit to add I did see Maria Bell's middle name written on a census it's Ann  ::) (1871)

Walton Herbert BELL born Leeds had a sister Maria A Bell (see previous census details posted), if he is the same person as Walton Herbert Bell/Beil born Canada (she could have be the witness M A Bell to Walton Herbert Bell 1875 marriage to Mary Ann Yates (nee White)

Maria Beatrice Bell is the daughter of Walton Herbert & Mary Ann nee White so she couldn't be a witness

BELL, CECIL  PERCY     mmn WHITE

For info.

It looks as if Walton & Mary Ann had a daughter born 1882 died age 12 months

Walton H, Mary A, John E Y, Maria B & Cecil P BELL were living at No 5 Woodside Street in 1881

I assure you I have a Maria Beatrice Beil  and Elizabeth A Aykroyd as a witness on the marriage certificate for Edward John  Yates to Mary Jane Aykroyd on 25th December 1896 ... when Edward John Yates got married to Mary Jane Aykroyd he was living at 20 Moss Street, Rochdale and she was living at 4 Spring Gardens Rawtenstall

“I assure you I have a Maria Beatrice Beil  and Elizabeth A Aykroyd as a witness on the marriage certificate for Edward John  Yates to Mary Jane Aykroyd on 25th December 1896”

In that discussion, wasn’t the reference to Maria A Bell being a witness at Mary Ann’s wedding?
