Walter's father is listed as John Bell on the wedding certificate and his job profession is listed as coal miner

His he named as WaltON or WaltER Herbert on m/c,
what address did he give and what was his occupation?

The 1871 census name is definitely WaltON Herbert Bell, book keeper - see added snippet

we think on the census Walter's surname has been put down wrong as Bell instead of Beil

Gets confusing with the changes in spelling Bell/Beil/Beile

I can see WALTON Herbert BEILE 76 (cotton mills bookkeeper) b Quebec Canad, widower on 1911 with his married daughter Maria

1901 he’s in Yorkshire transcribed as Walton Hbt BEILE age 66 Quebec Canada ‘M’
occ ??? Brass Foundry  :-\

There is this death entry

BEIL, WALTON  HERBERT   81
GRO Reference: 1915  D Quarter in ROCHDALE  Volume 08E  Page 61  Occasional Copy: A

Lancashire OPC has these details gives a different middle name

Burial: 16 Oct 1915 Cemetery, Bacup, Lancashire
Walton Hubert Beil Age: 81 Abode: Rochdale
Occupation: Sub-Post Master
Grave: C488 Consecrated Ground: Yes

Parish Removed From: Rochdale

Mary Ann White re-marries a Quebec, Canada man called Walter Herbert Beil or Bell in 1875 she is living in Bacup, Lancashire until she dies sometime between 1900 - 1910

Burial: 9 Dec 1910 Cemetery, Bacup, Lancashire
Mary Ann Beile, Married - Age: 68 yrs Abode: Rochdale
Grave: C488 Consecrated Ground: Yes C E
Class: 2nd

Walter's father is listed as John Bell on the wedding certificate and his job profession is listed as
coal miner

For info. - have just come across the official m/c on a public tree

WALTON Herbert BELL age 34, bachelor occ book keeper
father John BELL (deceased) occ Coal Merchant

Mary Ann YATES age 32, spinster
Father William George WHITE occ stone mason

Both signed their names, both resident 17 Alma Street Blackburn
One of the witnesses was M? A BELL

May just be a coincidence but I think there might be a possibility that
Walton Herbert BELL/BEIL(E) from Quebec, book keeper and WaltonHerbert BELL from Leeds, book keeper are one and the same  ???
Walton from Leeds has a sister named Maria A BELL (she might be the witness to his 1875 marriage to Mary Ann Yates - shame the name is not written in full  :-\)

I wonder how close Bicknell Street Blackburn & Alma Street Blackburn are to each other

the big assumption is that John Yates is Edward John's father. It's interesting to note that John  isn't listed as deceased on the baptism, although we know he was according to the census. Being in a big town it would be easy to give incorrect information and just say "oh my husband's away in the army"

Hi,

I found this "1865 JAMAICA ALMANAC" which shows which miltary were in Jamaica in 1865 which includes the 2nd Battalion, 6th Royal Regiment.

http://www.jamaicanfamilysearch.com/Members/a1865_08.htm

Also, a long read but interesting, written by Thomas FAUGHNAN, Late Colour-Sergeant, 2nd Battalion, 6th Royal Regiment. It contains the dates of when and where they were in the relevant time period.

https://www.gutenberg.org/files/51595/51595-h/51595-h.htm

26 Feb 1858  "we proceeded by rail to Aldershot"

18 May1858  "from South Camp to Farnborough Station, where we took the train for Portsmouth."  + "embarked on board H.M Ship "City of Manchester"

25 May 1858  Arrived Gibraltar

25 June 1862  embarked H.M.S. Himalaya.
26 June 1862  for the island of Corfu.
01 Jul 1862   Arrrived Corfu

This man was then stationed at Santa Maura.

04 Mar 1864  H.M.S. Orontes for Jamaica, in the West Indies.
18 April 1864  Arrived Jamaica

01 April 1867  Embarked on board the "Tamar" for Cork.
09 May 1867 Arrived at the Firth of Forth

"The 2nd Battalion 6th Royal Regiment was stationed in Edinburgh Castle over twelve months, when they got the route for Aldershot camp on the 30th May 1868."

So John YATES would have been in Jamaica and then back home in 1868.

Regards,
Daisy
