Help finding information about a historic death
« on: Wednesday 10 August 22 17:45 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am hoping that someone might point me in the right direction if possible.

I have come across an odd note written by my grandfather before he died about his grand parents. Which was written to try and document some of the family history.

The person details are Albert E Johnson 1806 - 1905 and Edith Johnson b1866.

A bit gruesome I am afraid.
The details suggest that Albert tried to kill Edith and the children, which Edith was able to prevent by grabbing hold of the knife. When he was unsuccessful Albert allegedly cut his own throat with the knife killing himself in front of Edith.

The act of grabbing the knife left Edith unable to use her hand properly following this.

I am trying to find confirmation as to whether this information is correct which may also help identify where Albert was buried. I am wondering whether there would likely be a record somewhere. However I do not know where to start looking.

Has anyone got any suggestions. I have tried some of the obvious stuff, however it does not provide  details.

Hopefully this makes sense

Cheers

Norfolk and Suffolk newspapers have reports of the incident ( various papers, 14 July 1905) and the inquest (report on 21 July).

Early reports say that his wife discovered him trying to kill himself and grabbed the knife to stop him, unsuccessfully, whereupon he cut his own throat. The inquest report says that she discovered him with a knife in his hand and tried to get it off him, and he died from loss of blood from a cut to his throat. Verdict suicide.

It was lucky Shaun found some details.

There was no reference to where in the world your research was based on the 'Beginners Board' which could've been anywhere.

Ha!!!! See Beginner!!!!

(Schoolboy error really sorry, that info is quite obvious)

Yes it is Suffolk, which is great. That must be the correct articles.

Hi Shaun would you be able to tell me how to find the news papers please.  I would like a copy of the article's if possible.

"The person details are Albert E Johnson 1806 - 1905"

Is this his death index entry...

JOHNSON, ALBERT  EDWARD  39
GRO Reference: 1905  S Quarter in IPSWICH  Volume 04A  Page 527

The age of 39 would have him born c1866 rather than 1806?

Hi Annie

So having just had to phone my mother to confirm,

Yes 1866 is correct, so I think that is the correct record.

Thanks

I used the newspaper database on FindMyPast but you can also use https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ which is the same database but has a better search engine. I believe that when you register with BNA you get a few free views.

You need to search for Albert Johnson in newspapers for Norwich, Ipswich and Diss for 13, 14 and 21 July 1905.
