South African Census Records and Nurse records 1900 - 1960
« on: Thursday 11 August 22 13:53 BST (UK) »
Hello

I'm fairly new to Family History and still finding my way around.

Does anyone know if it's possible to access online census records (for 1900 to 1960) for South Africa.  The possible site I've found comes up with 'forbidden' when I try to access it.

I'm also trying to see if any records of British nurses in South Africa exists.

Thanks so much!

Hiya Nina - and a warm welcome to Rootschat
firstly - could they still be alive ?  if not why not post a name and year of birth.
if they may be alive - do not post their name - that is not allowed ..
there is a site called - www.geneanet.org

I have done this as an example - Peters - search ...then click edit search and put in the box saying Country - South Africa - click search - results
https://en.geneanet.org/fonds/individus/?sexe=&nom=peters&ignore_each_patronyme=&prenom=&prenom_operateur=and&ignore_each_prenom=&place__0__=&zonegeo__0__=South+Africa&country__0__=ZAF&region__0__=&subregion__0__=&place__1__=&zonegeo__1__=&country__1__=&region__1__=&subregion__1__=&place__2__=&zonegeo__2__=&country__2__=&region__2__=&subregion__2__=&place__3__=&zonegeo__3__=&country__3__=&region__3__=&subregion__3__=&place__4__=&zonegeo__4__=&country__4__=&region__4__=&subregion__4__=&type_periode=between&from=&to=&exact_month=&exact_day=&exact_year=&go=1
you can also put in the years required
join the site for free and see if you can find who you are looking for - the Green Tree on the left - you click that and a familytree comes up
good luck
if you prefer - post names and dates and I will have a look for you  :)

Hello

Thanks so much, and for your detailed reply as well.

The person in question is no longer alive.  Her name was Mary Agnes Jane Stemson, Born in Clapham in 1889 and died in South Africa in 1961.  I know she qualified as a midwife in Pietermaritzburg at the end of 2019, and I wondered if I could discover any more about her life there.

I used the site you suggested, but sadly couldn't get any results.  I'm still getting used to wildcards etc so I'm not sure if it's the way I'm searching.

Thanks so much!

Hi Nina

Welcome from too  :)

I can see from your tree www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/114071486/person/342241231921/facts you have some details on Mary already.

Have you seen her death registration? The image of it shows here www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C91J-1914-H?cc=3732506&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AD562-F26Z

Hi Monica

Thank you!

Oh my goodness, I didn't have that record, thank you ever so much, I really appreciate you finding it.

I've been struggling to access images on familysearch but I think perhaps I haven't been searching properly...every record I try and find doesn't have an image with it.
