Did James have any brothers and sisters?
« on: Saturday 13 August 22 10:49 BST (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters,
I do hope you can help me please. :)

My 2 x great grandfather was James Cochrane Smith born 11 Dec 1813 Marylebone, Middlesex, died 24th Nov 1882 Beckenham, Kent. His father was William Smith (bef 1795- aft 1849), a baker, and mother was Mary Clements.

James married Elizabeth Stiller in Wimbledon 13 Sep 1849 and together they had 8 children.

I cannot find whether James Cochrane Smith had any brothers and sisters or any more detail on his parents William and Mary. The census I have found start in 1851.

It would be so good of you to bring your expertise to this and I thank you very much.

Kind regards
Roger

The trouble with Smith is that it is a common surname.  :-[  I just had a look on Find My Past and I get 319 hits for Smiths baptised in St. Marylebone with parents William and Mary.  I did 1813 five years on either side.  These are transcriptions only.

It may well be that some of these could be siblings of James. You would need to be able to access images for these baptisms to check if the father William is listed as a baker.

Do you have the original marriage certificate for James and Elizabeth?  Sometimes witnesses are family members and would only be helpful if they were Smith relatives.

I'll see if Freereg come up with anything more helpful but this website can be hit and miss for records that you want.

Added: Unfortunately nothing came up on Freereg for Smith, St. Marylebone.

Yes, it is tricky.

The marriage cert shows witnesses as STILLERs, I can't quite make out their names. And James' baptism just shows his father's occupation as "trade".

I've just gone through some St. Marylebone Baptisms for William & Mary & there are many entries
which just give occupation as trade so could be any of them or none.

Thank you so much for your replies. These are most appreciated and thank you. :)

I do have James Cochrane Smith and Elizabeth Stiller marriage certificate. It is where I learned William Smith was a baker.

The witnesses are John Stiller and Elizabeth Stiller - her mum and dad.

It sounds like a visit to a family search centre to view microfiche might be a way forward and just hope that the plethora of Smiths does not result in several Bakers in the Marylebone area.

Thank you again for taking the time to have a look. It is very good of you.

Kind regards
Roger

thank you. I shall take a look on family search. Most appreciated.

I have also been puzzled by James middle name 'Cochrane' and did wonder where that came from. I have not come across it except as a surname.

thanks again

It was common to have surnames as middle names.
Often came from the mother's side of the family.
