Hi, I am interested in finding out more on the Gilhooly. Mary Ann Gilhooly approx 1825 from ireland, was my GGG grandmother who was married to William Hibbert born approx 1825 in Cheshire. They married 26/4/1848 in Manchester. Their child George Samuel Hibbert was my GG grandfather.
I am very interested in learning more about the gilhoolys

The marriage 26th April 1848 shows her father as Charles Gilhooley, Porter.
A witness is Samuel Gilhooly.

Charles Gilhooly 77 yrs is lodging at his daughter’s Margaret Fisher.

His birthplace is transcribed as ‘Carwen’, Ireland which someone has interpreted as Cavan.
Margaret Fisher shows Carraganan as her birthplace.

Living together with others presumably as lodgers. 1841 ages were rounded down.

There are a couple of soldier’s records on a pay site plus 1871 1136 / 43/ 11  - Portsmouth
Michael Gilhooly 49 yrs b Carragalan, Leitrim  - a couple of variations on the spelling.
Perhaps Carrigallen, Leitrim?

I looked at the Tithe Applotment books and found 2 Chares Gilhooleys. One at Collooney, Ballysadare, co Sligo and one st Tawnycurry, Killoghert, co Leitrim. Parish registers for Ballysadore begin 1842, in Killoghert they are 1826-1854. I looked at baptisms up until 1835 but no Gilhooleys. As to Carrigallen, baptisms Nov 1829- Feb 1830 and Dec 1838- Jan 1881. Again I looked at them but no Gilhooleys. It doesn't mean they may not be from any of these areas but the records really don't go back far enough to cover childrens ages in 1841 census. For Carrigallen you could try surrounding areas in Cavan- Killeshandra, Kildallen & Templeport. Another thing you could try is getting death certs for Charles ( died Oct- Dec 1866 volume 8C, page 445), daughter Ellinor died March 1845 qtr or other family members. Sometimes they can give places of birth or area family member may have come from. If Charles was born circa 1780, records in that time period tend to be very scarce. Don't be afraid to expand search to possible aunts/ uncles etc. Sometimes find info in unlikely places. Kim

The actual image for the 1841 Census shows Charles' occupation as Porter which matches the marriage record.

Daughter Margaret's first marriage was to a Thomas Marsden, an organ builder, on February 18, 1844; both parties residents of Pendleton, Parish of Eccles, Church of England. Charles' occupation is given as a labourer, and Thomas' father is noted as also Thomas, an overlooker by occupation.

By November 18, 1855, Margaret (aged 30) is a widow and remarrying to James Fisher (aged 29), also a widower. By this time, Charles is noted as a bootmaker.
