Latin document

Kia ora

I was tempted to put in the subject line 'calling Bookbox' because that person has transcribed latin documents for me before.

To be honest I have no idea whatsoever what this is about, nor why I specially wanted it several months ago, but I have paid a largish sum so think I better find out.  I work on too many fronts....

All help appreciated

It’s an Inquisition Post Mortem (or IPM) after the death of William Ticknor, held at Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, on 7 December 1593.

After the death of someone who was supposedly a tenant-in-chief (holding lands of the Crown), it was customary to hold a local enquiry to determine the extent and value of his lands, to find out if any payments were due to the Crown, and to identify his heir. If the heir was under age, the Crown would take back the lands temporarily until the heir came of age.

The separate strip is just the writ to the escheator, instructing him to hold the enquiry.

I’m afraid I don’t have time to go through it now, but I might be able to look this evening, if no-one else has done it by then.

Further to the above, a summary ...

  • six acres of meadow with appurtenances in Dorking, Surrey, held of the Duke of Abergavenny as of the manor of Coombe, rent 2s, value 5s per year
  • two messuages or tenements known as Moone Hall and Eldridge in Ewhurst, Surrey, containing about 60 acres, held of Ralph Dalton as of the manor of Coneyhurst, rent 6s, valued 20s per year
  • one messuage or tenement with a garden next to it in Dorking, Surrey, as of the manor of Dorking, for fealty and rent of 6d, value 2s per year
William Ticknor died on 1 May 1591.

He is not known to have held anything else in demesne, reversion, service or in any other way from anyone else.

Copies sent by R. Garth to the Court of Wards and to the Exchequer.
