Can't find family in 1901 census
« on: Sunday 21 August 22 04:33 BST (UK) »
Hi all. Having a bit of trouble finding a family in the 1901 census, any help would be appreciated, and if they weren't in the census, what would the reason be?

Head of household would be
Hugh Alexander, born 1857 (give or take a few years for each birthdate)
Wife, Margaret (or Maggie) born 1863
Children, David born 1881
Hugh born 1883
Ellen born 1885
James born 1887
Jane born 1889
William born 1891
Margaret (or Maggie) born 1894
Agnes born 1896
John born 1898

The family would be living in Tarbolton, or possibly surrounding areas.

Thanks

Can you identify this family in 1891 Census, Scotland (?)  please?

Were they all born in Scotland?

Margaret   McAlister   38   Tarbolton, Ayrshire
David   McAlister   19
Hugh   McAlister   17
Ellen       McAlister 16
James   McAlister 14
Jane   McAlister   11
William   McAlister   9
Margaret   McAlister   7
Agnes   McAlister 5
John   McAlister  2

Checked the image and the surname is listed as McAlister.  An enumerator error?? :-\

1895 and 1905 Valuation Rolls have a Hugh Alexander at Garden Street. In 1915 and 1920 Rolls, the only entries for a Hugh Alexander in Tarbolton are at Mossblown and Back Street. No Hugh McAlister in Tarbolton for these years, so does sound as if something might be astray with the 1911 1901 surname.

Hi all, thanks for the help so quickly, this had been  bugging me for a while!

I think that 1901  census is correct - they resided in Garden Street and then moved to Back Street by the time 1911 came along.
