Donald the Grieve
« on: Monday 22 August 22 17:05 BST (UK) »
Further to my post about my GG GF Archibald Macdonald made sometime ago, I have found out that his father was Donald the Grieve of Clianaig (1773-31/7/1882).
I was wondering if 'the Grieve' means anything? Can anyone enlighten me please? Thank you.
Kevin.

Donald the Grieve of Clianaig (1773-31/7/1882).

I know this was not the question but the age of 109 seems unusual, below the oldest to die in Scotland in 1882, is this him on the Isle of Lewis?

DONALD MACDONALD Died age 98 Born about 1784  (Mother‘s name) - MCLEOD 1882   Barvas.

Thank you for your replies.

nanny jan - an overseer, would that be like a farm/estate manager or a farm bailiff?

Colin - sorry my mistake! the DoD is 31/07/1862.

Kevin.

I guess it is a possibility that 'overseer' would fit a farm/estate manager etc.

A grieve is a farm overseer, but it can be used of other kinds of overseer. For example a moss-grieve was in charge of the rights to extract peat from an estate moss. In the latter case it would not be a full-time job, but might be carried out by a crofter.
