John Beynon son of William Beynon, Farmer
« on: Tuesday 23 August 22 14:16 BST (UK) »
When John Beynon married Emma Hitchcock in Swansea on 5th October 1881 his age was recorded as 22 years, thus born around 1859, and his father was recorded as William Beynon - Farmer.  Unfortunately, John Beynon died between 1886/1887 and 1891, and his wife Emma Beynon (formerly Hitchock married Robert Trew in 1891, so there is little to go on with respect to census records.  I'm assuming he died, I have been caught out previously and have found more than one bigamous marriage along the way, hopefully, that won't be a factor in this case.

John Beynon's residence at the time of his marriage in 1881 was Singleton Terrace Swansea, I found John Beynon b.1857 in the 1881 Census living at 2 Terrace Road, Swansea ... RG11/5361/35 p  5 [/b]

I am not sure if I have the John Beynon who later that year married Emma Hitchcock, he is the only good fit I could find.  In this census record, his place of birth is recorded as Lanngenny, could this possibly be Llangennith or Llandewi?

I searched for John Beynon in the 1861 census and found two records where the father's name was William Beynon -

1) William Beynon b. 1821 Glamorgan - Farmer of 64 acres - Residence - Scarlag Castle, Llandewi, Gower - his son John Beynon was born in 1856 in Llandewi
 RG9/ 4109/102 p 2

2) William Beynon b.1821 Llangennith - Labourer - Residence - Labourer House, Muzzard , Llangennith - his son John Beynon was born 1855 in Llangennith
 RG9/4109/36 p15

I have no idea which record is the correct one,  there are 5 birth registrations for John Beynon between 1855 and 1859 in Swansea, and 1 in Gower dated 1858.

There is a death registration for John Beynon in Swansea Mar 1891 - 35 years, the year of birth would be abt. 1856, this could be the husband of Emma Beynon (formerly Hitchcock).  I'll probably send for it hoping to glean some information.

If anyone can help pinpoint the 'right' John Beynon I'd be really grateful as I'm totally stuck at the moment.

Many thanks for taking the time to read through all the info.

Yvonne :)

David who married Elizabeth Davies in 1883

The witness at John and Emma wedding also married.

John and Emma were witness to theirs. Maybe this John was a cousin his father is John Beynon, possible brother of William Beynon?

John Beynon, Age: 31
Birth Date:   1850
Marriage Date:   5 Oct 1881
Marriage Place:   Swansea St James, Glamorganshire, Wales
Father:   John Beynon, farmer

the 1861 census you found has a William Beynon & family at Scurlage Castle - transcribed as Scarlag.

By the following census, the family are living in Pennard & farming 200 acres.

The George Beynon who married Ruth Button gave Rhossili as his address. He did have an older brother John but he was born 1846ish.

This might be John who married Sarah Button at the joint wedding in 1891, judging by the maiden name on the son's birth registration

Living in Oxwich

John C Beynon    39    Head b Rhossili
Sarah Beynon     33    Wife
Robert John Beynon   10    Son

Following back he either has Rhossili or Llanddewi as his place of birth

Was just about to post Edward & Sarah marriage, Glam marriage index states both of Rhossili, married by banns, original copy has witness and consent of parents (possibly one or both minors?) Only have index.

Glamorgan Baptisms have:

William Beynon bapt 9 July 1820 father Edward, blacksmith, mother Sarah, abode Middleton, Rhossili

John Beynon bapt 23 Oct 1824 same parents, same abode. Can be found in census wife Elizabeth

So It looks like the 2 John's are cousins?  Both father's are brothers.

Likely other children for Edward and Sarah, see what OP thinks. Edward can be found in census b c1798

marriage for William

15 Jan 1846 parish church of Rhossili
William Beynon full bach smith Middleton father Edward Beynon smith
Sarah Edwards full age spinster Pilton father John Edwards farmer
witnesses Thomas Richard & John Beynon

So the William at Scurlage Castle married to Ann isn't John's brother. There is another William baptised in Rhossili 31 Dec 1820 son of David who might account for that William.

But the John, son of William & Sarah, was registered march qtr 1846 Swansea mmn Edward so not a match for age according to the 1881 marriage. And father William is a blacksmith, not a farmer.
