Mental Disorder, 1930s.
« on: Tuesday 23 August 22 16:15 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help me decipher what this mental disorder is? The patient was 43 at the time in the mid-1930s.

Thanks.

Thank you both for confirming, I though dementia, but wasn't too sure. Does anyone know what disorders this covered in the 1930s?

Not necessarily the Dementia associated with age.
Any disorder that brings about extreme confusion and aberrant behaviour .The loss of mental powers such as memory ,orientation ,intelligence.

Dementia Praecox ,is now better known as Schizophrenia.
A psychosis marked by introversion, dissociation and inability to differentiate between reality and unreality .Often called split personality as the patient can be like two different people as they suffer delusions that they are unable to see are not real.
Tragic.

Thank you for the clarification Viktoria, the ancestor I am researching had a number of tragedies that happened to him almost in succession, and he became an alcoholic, which eventually caused mental ill-health. It's, unfortunately, a very sad story.

If he had a number of tragedies almost in succession it could have brought on a form of PTSD resulting in him using alcohol as a form of mental anaesthesia.
