This is all very sad.

Unfortunately, it is a very sad story. I'll give a little more information if people are interested, can't disclose names though at the records are still closed.

My ancestor grew up very rich but his mother died a few weeks after he was born. He lost his father when only a teenager. On the day he returned to visit home after fighting in WW1, a few days before the armistice, his wife died during childbirth, and the baby also died. He couldn't cope and turned to alcohol, seemingly shunned by his siblings. A few years later his brother died and his brother's wife then married him in attempt to get money (as his brother had been deserted by the family (because he was a communist) and his wife was left destitute on his death. Their other siblings had servants at this time and were very wealthy generally). My ancestor and his second wife hated each other and the marriage only lasted a few years before he left her. His mental condition had deteriorated by 1925 when he had his first 'attack'. By the early 30s, his mental condition was very poor, and he had received a lot of money, spent all on alcohol, and was threatening suicide, the papers report. He returned to the home of his first wife's mother for a while between leaving his second wife and being institutionalised where he died in 1941 due to epilepsy.

Very sad indeed - an almost unbelievable series of misfortunes.

It's easy to see how someone could turn to alcohol given the tragedies that happened to him, but alcohol is, of course, never the answer.

A very sad story.
