Ages on parish registers
« on: Monday 29 August 22 13:56 BST (UK) »
How much reliance can I put on the age entered on a Burial Record?
My ancestors birth on his Baptism record is 12 July 1772 Baptised October 1772
He died in May 1832 aged 64, (burial record) which would make him just short of 60.
After searching I am certain I have the right person but the age difference has just put that bit of doubt into me.

Welcome to Rootschat!
As you definitely have his DOB on his baptism record then this would be the correct record. Burial record dates are less reliable depending on who gave his age at the time-"I think he was about etc.) The other option is of course this could be two different people. Do you have a copy of his death certificate?
Regards.

Welcome from me also.

At that time people were often unaware of their own age, so it is quite common for the informant to give the wrong age when registering a death. Death certificates are the least reliable of the certificates.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a death certificate or Parish Register, the same applies regarding ages.

Thank you all for your help. I have not found any one else who died in the same place as he did with the same name, and I found another burial just about a month later of a woman with the same name as his wife. On her burial it says she died of Cholera. I think I am safe to say these are the people I am looking for.
Once again Thank you
Stephen

When did he marry? Was there any indication of his age in the marriage register? Although that wasn't always accurate either.

There is no indication of his age when he married. Basically all I have is his date of birth\Baptism. As I have said I cannot find any one else who may fit.
Thanks for suggestions
