5 Brunswick Square
« on: Wednesday 31 August 22 22:05 BST (UK) »
I am not sure if I am asking in the right place. I have my mothers birth certificate (she has long passed), and it shows she was born in 1927 in 5 Brunswick Square which I believe was a poor house / workhouse at that time. I am just trying to expand on the records to find out when my mother left there as for years she tells me she remembers being in an orphanage type of establishment.
In fact, there is no father on the certificate and it has adopted typed on it. The informant was my grandmother, so it is still a bit of a mystery and I cant seem to get past this to learn more. can anyone advise please? many thanks

Welcome from me, too  :)

As an alternative, the only Brunswick Square in London that I know of is in Bloomsbury/Camden.

My sister lived near there for many years and my niece and her family still live there.
It has a long connection with Thomas Coram and the Foundling Hospital. (now part of the Museum there).

Which Brunswick Square do you mean?  There is one in Bristol as well as the one in London.  What was the Registration District on the birth certificate?
Ashford: Somerset, London
England: Devon, London, New Zealand
Holdway: Wiltshire
Hooper: Bristol, Somerset
Knowling: Devon, London
Southcott: Devon, China
Strong: Wiltshire
Watson: Cambridgeshire
White: Bristol
Windo - Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire

I've found that, from the early 1920s to at least 1939,  3-5 Brunswick Square, St Pancras/Bloomsbury, WC1 appears to be a hostel for students and working women.

So I don't think it's that one. It's disappointing as it fits with the Coram/Foundling link    :(
