Help with finding GRO ref for birth cert.
« on: Thursday 01 September 22 13:02 BST (UK) »
I am having a bit of a conundrum.

Ann Jane.
She was married to Leonard Atkinson in Apr 1920, and on the marriage certificate (attached) she gives her name as Ann Jane Turner (widow) and states that her father was William Pennington.

In the 1921 census she gives her age as 28 years and 5 months, and that she was born in St. Helens Lancashire, so I went with an approx. DOB of January 1893.
Information from my family however says that she was born on 1st November 1893.

I was wondering if anybody would be able to help me find the GRO Index Reference for Ann Jane's birth certificate as I cannot seem to find the correct person?

Hi

She was very easy to find on A*y - 1911 census look for Ann Jane Pennington - she's with parents Edwin and Martha but it looks like her mother was unmarried when she was born so Edwin could be a step father.

GRO Reference: 1893  D Quarter in PRESCOT  Volume 08B  Page 725

I'll have a further look for 1901 now.   Have you found a marriage ?

Thank you for the help :)

I haven't found the marriage, no.

It hadn't occurred to me about the unmarried mother, I think I got myself turned around a few times.

Hi again
Married James Turner in 2nd quarter of 1916 in Ulverston.  There does not appear to be a Parish marriage - could James Turner have died in the war ?

There is something written in pencil by the enumerator in the 1911 census but I can't make it out.

There are several possibilities in 1901 but nothing that adds up.  Lots of Penningtons about.

I would get that first marriage certificate to confirm the father.

Back to work now.

My pleasure

I can't clip the 1911 here - maybe someone else - there's something strange about that 1911 census FindMyPast has her down as a servant but A*y has her down as daughter. I wish I could read that pencil mark.

She is the 1939 with Leonard - her birthdate is 1st Nov 1894 (a year out ) looks there's a son as well - Henry born 1927.
Now definitely back to work  ::)

Martha's maiden surname was POWELL and Ann Jane is not with them in 1901.  I don't think she is their daughter.

The pencil entry states "Servant" and "daughter" is crossed out.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

In 1891 Edwin is living with his uncle William Garnet PENNINGTON, wife is Margaret Ellen formerly PENNINGTON and they were married in 1884.
