Richard Wagon
« on: Saturday 03 September 22 12:16 BST (UK) »
The attached image is the marriage of Richard Wagon of Pepinbury (Pembury)  and Alice Gibbons in Tonbridge 1685.

However there is some text which confuses me. Any ideas?

Richard Wagon & } de Pepenbury [Pembury] y free Roffe (?)
     Alice Gibbons }

[Just as I posted I realised that what I thought was a "3" and a "d" is in fact a curly bracket. However what is not explained is the "y free Roffe"

Hello
It's something like
Richard Wagon  & } (but over both lines)  de(of) Pembury y free  roffe
Alice Gibbons

The latter seems to have something to do with is it by banns or licence.The other entries have Y Ban presumably for banns or per fac roffe .

Looking at other entries on the page it is fac. and not free.

I agree with Ciderdrinker that some of the marriages are by Banns and this one is by fac. Ross or Ress which is probably by Licence of some sort.

Excellent. Could that be "fac Roffensis" perhaps (faculty Rochester?)

It reads …
... p(er) fac(ultatem) Roffe’ eodem die
... by a faculty of Rochester on the same day

Roffensis = ‘of Rochester’.

But it's not clear from the way you've snipped it whether eodem die relates to the faculty, or to the entry that follows (not shown).

Thanks. I thought the same. I suspect it deals with the following entry but it's not clear either way

Foord (Kent - Aldington, Stanford area)
