Irish Place Name Help Please
« on: Sunday 04 September 22 10:20 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

Is there anyone who can kindly decipher the place name at the right hand side of this baptism please.

It is in 1853 and from 'Mayo and Sligo, Kilmoremoy' Baptism place (from the transcription).
On English census records, the baptised child, Anthony Henigan, gives his birthplace as Sligo.

The abode, to me, looks like 'Mayston' - but I have looked at the Townlands website and there is no such place.

Many thanks for reading.

Does look like Mayston or Maystown but closest I can find is Marystown in Co. Roscommon-

Have you looked for other children baptised to the same parents to see if another version of the place is listed?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you Aghadowey for your speedy reply.

Now why didn't I think of looking for other children? Needless to say - no I didn't -- but will do so - good idea.

(To be honest I was so thrilled that he had shown an actual County on the English census records, rather than just Ireland.)

I will away and hunt!! Thank you again.

Looking at other entries in the register is the first letter a "W"? Can see several definite "Ws" (Walsh, William) in the register and they appear to have the same little swirl/flourish that starts the first letter of the mystery word.

Oh thank you Hanes Teulu,

I have found another baptism as per Aghadowey's suggestion - for a Pat Henigan - that place name looks like Maystown - but no such place in Sligo or Mayo.

I will look for 'W' place names now - and then give up. I am ecstatic to have 'Sligo' on census records! Maybe they moved there and Anthony just thought he was born in that County.

There are Hannigans on Griffiths in Mayo.

My Henagins are from Co Roscommon from Bumlin and that is close to Strokestown. Anthony, Patt & Desmond are some of my Henagins. But a fair way from Sligo or Mayo!

Thank you shanreagh,

It's a mystery! I'm doing a friend's family tree, so at the moment I can only go from what Anthony has put as his birthplace -- Sligo. Initially I thought the 'abode' on his baptism, and it's the same father as on his marriage cert, was a bonus.

It's turned out to be a pain in the neck!! I'm going to ignore it now.
