I've checked on different sites and if Herbert Sadd is on the 1901 census it wasn't with his given name and I've checked everywhere, not just in London.

It would be interesting to see his address on his marriage certificate, even though that was in 1903. Do you have Alice BALES in the 1901? I can't see her easily, though I can see her in 1871 in London with her widowed father George (police constable born Wymondham) and in 1881 and 1891 in Wymondham with her father's family.

I don't think he was with Alice then - they married in 1903.

Without wanting to dredge anything up, it's the period before he married which is of interest...

Could he have been recorded as Henry in 1901?

Is that marriage on Ancestry at all? I know they have quite a few London based marriages on their website.

Holdway: Wiltshire
Hooper: Bristol, Somerset
Knowling: Devon, London
Southcott: Devon, China
Strong: Wiltshire

Windo - Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire

Yes, the marriage is listed but not the certificate as such.

Monica - I suppose Henry could be Herbert but I suspect it's  Harry...

Any chance he may have volunteered to fight in the Boer War? That's a regular reason for younger men to be difficult to find in 1901

Now that's an interesting thought and may be worth following up. However it's not brought up in this article http://www.eastangliandulcimers.org.uk/Herbert%20Sadd.htm
which is based on interviews with his family. It's curious that my great grandmother  who may have been an, er, acquaintance of his is also missing in the 1901 census.

But thanks for the suggestion.
