Eliza Southwell
« on: Monday 05 September 22 05:30 BST (UK) »
I am researching my ancestor Eliza Southwell who emigrated with her sister Mary, in 1836 aboard the 'Boadicea' from Ireland to VDL. Her parentage shows that they were the granddaughters of Viscount Thomas Arthur Southwell and Countess Sophia Josepha Walsh de Serrant. If this is, in fact, accurate what I am wondering and hoping to find out, is why would 2 young women from such a privileged background journey to Van Diemans Land? Their father is listed as a Charles AF Southwell with a possible name for their mother as Susannah Callis. Thankyou.

If you search for Viscount Thomas Arthur Southwell a Wikipedia entry - using Debrett's peerage as reference says he was the oldest son of Thomas Southwell, 1st Viscount Southwell and his wife Margaret Hamilton, daughter of Arthur Cecil Hamilton of Castle Hamilton, Killeshandra Co. Cavan.
Thomas Arthur Southwell 2nd Viscount Southwell, married 1774, to Sophia Maria Josepha Walsh, third daughter of Francis Joseph Walsh, Comte de Serrant, and they had four sons and four daughters (which aren't named) apart from the eldest son Thomas who became the 3rd Viscount on his father's death.

Do documents in Australia give Mary and Eliza's parents names?

Hello and thank you to all that responded. My Eliza did marry George Oliver in 1836. There are no documents in Australia that I have been able to find that prove that Charles Southwell is their father nor who their mother is. I have a few trees on different sites and familysearch.org is the only one with the information saying that Charles was their father and the Viscount and Countess their grandparents. I have contacted the person who added that information but am yet to hear back. No birth certificates have been added as proof.

This looks to be Charles with parent Thomas Arthur - 2nd Viscount.

Hon Charles Southwell KCH, an Army officer (b. 17 Mar 1779; d. 13 Dec 1851)

There is a death and a will for him.1851

Difficult to read but I can only see reference to a God daughter but I haven’t tried to read it all.

If there is some truth in the story, perhaps the girls were illegitimate.

Charles who died was 72 yrs in 1851.

There are newspaper snippets (I have no access) mentioning the death plus some in 1839 referring to some sort of marriage celebration. I don't know if they mean he is a guest and they might indicate that he has a wife.

You would need to read them properly rather than the snippets.

The female immigrants on the Boadicea were from various institutions in Ireland, Scotland and England.  It is unlikely that any were well connected.

The son of Viscount Thomas Arthur SOUTHWELL was just 'Charles', no middle names.

Honourable Charles's will mentions a niece and a brother and a sister in law, but nothing about a wife and children.
No mention of a marriage here either
