Hello, I can't help with your query but wonder if you have seen this fascinating site? https://spitalfieldslife.com/
I searched for Gun Street on that site without success but there's a wealth of history of Spitalfields that may be of interest.
Good luck with your research 🙂

Not sure if this helps.   :-\ On this 1915 map there is a public house shown on Gun St. It could be the "Two Brewers" at 57 Gun St on the 1861 census?

Though it appears there may have been another public house on the corner of Gun and Fort Sts.

This detailed 1890 map produced for the fire insurance companies may help locate the address.  It covers the side of Gun Street you're interested in.  42 isn't explicitly listed but it appears that at that time it was on the corner of Gun Street and Brushfield Street identified as an ironmongers - https://www.oldmapsonline.org/map/britishlibrary/mapsu145ubu22u11uf311r

I'd recommend using the 'View as overlay' link as it's pretty zoomable.
