 Nuffin' wrong with casting a search for the mysterious "John" TANFIELD, Signal ... (indeed, the process of elimination plays - or should play -  a big part in properly researching, anything).   

My "money" was always on Thomas and Mary, though.

There are three living persons in NZ,  descendants of Samuel,  who have taken Ance$try DNA tests.   (None of them named TANFIELD)   I'm now hoping the UK connection I have recently found may turn up a match of 4th cousins.   Otherwise John becomes again more likely.
