« on: Thursday 15 September 22 07:45 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on William Bond showing on the 1901 Census with wife Florence and son George.
They were at Oakham,Rutland.
On the 1911 she is shown as married to Charles Maudsley af Alton,Hants. George shown as stepson.
What happened to William Bond? There is quite a distance between Oakham and Alton
Any assistance greatly appreciated. Thank You David

Charles and Florence married in Oakham in 1907 so that helps.

There are newspaper snippets (I can’t see the articles) about a man, William Bond, found drowned in Grantham, in April 1906.

One mentions him being a manager at a drapers so looks to be your William.

Death June quarter 1906, Grantham.
William Bond, 45 yrs.

This snippet helps and is definitely him.

28 April 1906 Boston Guardian
“Mrs. W. Bond, care of G. Du pond, Ampthill. Bedfordshire, also post-office withdrawal warrant made payable to William Bond, signed William Bond, and payable {it the Oakham Post-office. The deceased was apparently from to 40 yearn age”

I think Florence was Florence DuPont/d.

Another reports the verdict of suicide and gives an age of 45 yrs.

There are plenty of Bonds located at Alton, Hants.  Thats where most of my Bond ancestors are from so Florence might originate from there or have moved back, same goes for William.

Happy to send you a copy of the whole article about the inquest
Saturday,  Apr. 28, 1906, Publication: Grantham Journal

It mentions he was the son of Edward BOND, draper in Grantham who "ended his life in a tragic manner ... in 1885". Having failed in continuing his father's business, William moved to Stamford and Oakham, however was caught in stealing from the company he was working for as manager. He separated from his wife in September 1905. Quite a bit more detail if you are interested.

Modified to add:
Also a few articles about his father Edward BOND's death in 1885. Happy to copy if you're interested.

Yes very sad, I'm sure the experience of his father's death must have affected him. Reading the report of the inquest makes it seem even more tragic - although he was caught misappropriating funds, it sound like the owners of the business were not going to press charges, but in fact give him £10 and ask him to leave the city, though they hadn't had a chance to inform him of this. There is also a very poignant letter that he wrote to his wife which mentions how much he loved his child.
