1486 Thomas Spring - Latin
« on: Thursday 15 September 22 09:33 BST (UK) »
Kia ora

I would appreciate the rest of this will being transcribed.  It is quite a short will in Latin which someone has already done some work on for me.  However he said his Latin was a bit limited.

This is what was translated.
In the name of God 29 March 1486 Thomas Spring of Lavenham being of good mind & memory.
St Peter’s Church, Lavenham
William Spring, son, testator gives £100 lawful money of England
Jacob/James Spring, son, testator gives £100 lawful money of England
Mariane Spring, daughter, testator gives £100 lawful money of England
Gives to the parish 10/-
Sudbury
Makes Thomas Spring, son, executor
Witnesses – John Hed?,  John Sybryght, William Bungay, Johanne Byrd

Proved at London 12 September by Thomas Spring the son & executor
NOTE:  There is no year given in the probate, I have taken ‘1487’ from the PRO Wills index

This was his family.
Thomas Spring II 1430c married Julian Fayrye (daughter and heir of John Fayrye who died Sheriff of London).  Thomas then married Margaret Appleton 1444c and they had seven children: Thomas Spring of Lavenham 'The Rich Clothier' 1456, Cecily Spring 1460-1490 (m.Robert Sexton) William Spring of Lavenham & Long Melford d.1510 Will, James Spring d.31 August 1493 in a fight between. Lavenham and the village 2.5 miles away Brent Eleigh, buried Lavenham church vestry, Marian Spring still living in 1486, Female Spring, John Spring

29 March 1486
Thomas Spring of Lavenham, diocese of Norwich, sane mind and healthy memory
Soul to Almighty God, body to be buried in the entrance-porch of the parish church of the Blessed Peter the Apostle at Lavenham
To William Spring, my son, £100
To James Spring, my son, £100
To Marian, my daughter, £100
To the Rector of my parish church, 10 shillings, to pray for my soul
To my spinners, fullers and weavers, 100 marks, to be distributed at my executors’ discretion
For building the steeple/bell-tower of the parish church of Lavenham, 300 marks
To the Minorite brothers at Babwell, 20 marks
To the Dominican brothers at Sudbury, 20 marks
To the Augustinian brothers at Clare, 10 marks
The rest of my goods to Margaret, my wife, and Thomas Spring, my elder son
Executors – Thomas Spring, Margaret my wife
Witnesses – John Hed, John Sybryght, William Bungay, John Byrd

Proved at London, 12 September ‘in the aforesaid year’; administration to son Thomas Spring, with power reserved to the widow Margaret; inventory to be submitted by 29 September.

Note: the will was drawn up 29 March 1486 and proved in September of the same year (the year began on 25 March). A glance at other wills recorded in the same section of this register would support 1486 being correct, rather than 1487, despite the catalogue.

ADDED
A death year of 1486 is also supported by this article ...

Kia ora Bookbox

Many thanks once again that is marvellous.  I especially appreciate the url you sent, I have looked at some but definitely missed this and it is extremely helpful.

I see the note about the inventory does that mean that must be filed somewhere?

The inventory is at the National Archives, PROB 2/14. It is not online, but a copy can be requested ...

Many thanks, I have spent quite a bit getting these things, I might have to flag that.  Will it be in Latin?

Will it be in Latin?

I'd expect it to be in English, but it could be tricky to read.

I'd expect it to be in English, but it could be tricky to read.

I took a quick look at the item today at TNA (PROB 2/14).

Although it is filed with the inventories, there is in fact no surviving inventory for this estate but only the executors’ accounts. These are in a long roll, in Latin, and unfortunately only partly readable because of damage and fading. I doubt you will get much out of them, sorry.

Thanks Bookbox - how come you can actually see it, I would have had to pay for it, or was that a pre-look at thing.
